Primal Calm supports your body's natural ability to reduce stress and helps your body do what it already does, but better.
Stress causes a rise in adrenal stress hormones. The adrenal glands are called into action when stressful events occur. Cortisol is a longer acting stress hormone secreted by the adrenals. Cortisol is supposed to be released when you are in immediate danger or undergoing trauma. Cortisol basically shuts down all of your long-term functions so that you can survive for the next couple of hours. Cortisol decreases the uptake of calcium by your bones, and shuts down the immune system, since it is an immune suppressor. Cortisol basically tears down muscle tissue so that you can take amino acids into the muscles, and then send them to the liver to be made into glucose so that your brain keeps working. That's kind of wasteful, but during times of acute stress, it’s helpful for survival. It follows a short-term strategy to survive right now, and then your body's output of cortisol decreases and is able to repair the muscles and bones when there is no longer a threat.
Chronic Stress affects the adrenal system. The adrenal system is a great system when the insults to it only occur once every couple of days, weeks, or months, but some people are dealing with continual assaults on their adrenals. As chronic stress builds up, it gradually tears down our muscle tissue. Over time, chronic cortisol secretion actually causes a deposition of belly fat, which makes it harder to lose weight. Lack of sleep is also a major stressor. So if you can't sleep well, then you're battling stress hormones! What you want to do is support your body's natural ability to deal with this stress.
Phosphatidly Serine (PS) is the number one ingredient for suppressing cortisol. L-Theanine is the good stuff in green tea. Rhodiola Rosea is an adaptogenic herb from the plains of Siberia that has been used for centuries to help inhabitants better adapt to cold weather. Beta-Sitosterol is a cholesterol-like substance that helps reduce stress, and Magnolia Bark has anti-anxiety properties. The ingredients work synergistically to lower high cortisol.
The two best forms of calcium are calcium citrate and calcium carbonate. That's why we use both. Don't be fooled by competitors claims that carbonate is a less-than-ideal form!
In general, calcium carbonate is the preferred salt form of calcium, because of its high percentage composition of elemental calcium (meaning fewer tablets need to be taken) and low cost. The carbonate and citrate salts are also available in liquid formulations, while the glubionate form is available as a liquid only. Calcium carbonate is also available as a chewable tablet. Individuals in whom diminished gastric acidity is suspected (e.g., the elderly, those with achlorhydria, or those receiving therapy with histamine-2 receptor antagonists or proton pump inhibitors) should probably receive a more soluble calcium salt, such as calcium citrate.
