Q: What the heck is collagen?
A: Collagen is the protein that holds everything in your body together. It makes up about 30% of all the protein in the human body, and is found in your bones, tendons, ligaments, connective tissues and skin, and plays various roles in your overall health. Collagen production naturally declines with age, reducing the structural integrity of the skin and instigating the weakening of cartilage in joints. You can help make up for decreased collagen production by eating collagen sourced from grass-fed bovines pasture-raised in Brazil.
Q: Why should I eat collagen?
A: The collagen protein used in Primal Kitchen Dark Chocolate Almond Bars is collagen hydrolysate from grass-fed cows, which is broken down into individual amino acids and easier to absorb and digest, so it’s a preferable alternative to taking collagen in, say, capsule form. Furthermore, it’s 100% protein, and we all know the benefits of ingesting clean protein.
Q: Where does your collagen come from?
A: We partnered with one of the world's leading collagen suppliers for our bars. They are a European company that sources collagen from grass-fed cows in both Germany and Brazil. They have conducted extensive clinical studies on the benefits of their exact collagen, which is superior to other collagen brands on the market due to their unique manufacturing process.
Q: Are the seeds and nuts tested for mycotoxins?
A: Yes, All of the seeds and nuts in the bars are tested for aflatoxins (mycotoxins)
Q: What types of collagen do the bars contain?
A: Our collagen includes Types 1 & 3 for hair, skin, nails, and bones.
Q: Are the cows responsible for rainforest destruction in Brazil?
A: The cows are feeding on "off forest" land to prevent the destruction of the rainforest. In the past decade, virtually all slaughterhouses have followed the lead of the top three meat producers in conducting only off forest feeding. Additionally, our supplier has signed the G-4 agreement that was initiated by Greenpeace to ensure that no new rainforest impact is created based on intensive monitoring and requirements of the G-4 agreement.
Q: What is the % of cocoa?
A: The Cocoa is 100% Cocoa Extract. It is organic, fair-trade cocoa powder from France.
Q: What about the almonds?
A: The Almonds are premium Turkish almonds, however, they aren’t certified organic.
Q: What is monk fruit?
A: Also called Luo Han Goa, monk fruit is a Chinese herb cultivated for centuries by Buddhist monks. Much like stevia, it’s a delicious and natural way to sweeten without all the calories of sugar.
Q: What are net carbs?
A: You determine the net carb impact of a food by subtracting the grams of fiber from the total grams of carbohydrates. Fiber slows the digestion of carbohydrates and reduces the glycemic burden on the body.
Q: Are there GMOs in the Dark Chocolate Almond Bar?
A: Nope! We’re working on the Non-GMO certification right now.
Q: What's the integrity of Primal Kitchen Honey?
A: We use Canadian Grade 1 pasteurized honey. Absolutely no high-fructose corn syrup is mixed into our honey, as it is in some other brands.
Q: What is hydrolyzed collagen?
A: Hydrolyzed collagen is also called collagen peptides or collagen hydrolysate. The collagen has undergone a process of hydrolysis (separating the molecular bonds between collagen strands with an acid, like lime or enzymes) to reduce the protein into smaller peptides, which renders it more readily bioavailable. The amino acid content of collagen is the same as that of hydrolyzed collagen. Most clinical studies on the benefits of collagen have been conducted using hydrolyzed collagen peptides. Collagen hydrolysate has the same amino acids (and health benefits) as gelatin but different chemical properties. Some people may find collagen hydrolysate easier to digest.
Q: What exactly are natural flavors?
A: Don't be alarmed! Our natural flavors are simply cocoa extract with absolutely no MSG or hidden ingredients. We list them as natural flavors per the legal guys. We are looking into calling them what they are on the label moving forward: cocoa extract. Our bar maker in Canada is one of the top facilities in the world (did you know that Canada is ranked #1 in food safety?), and they are just as committed to ingredient integrity as we are.
Q: I have an allergy, are the bars manufactured in a facility that contains allergens?
A: The line that the bars are manufactured on is thoroughly cleaned and swabbed after allergens / before our product is run. They have an allergen control program and specific cleaning protocols to do the best they can to avoid allergen residues. No 100% guarantee, but the best you can do.
Q: Your bars are Gluten Free, does that mean you test them for Gluten?
A: Yes, we test each lot for Gluten. They must pass the test for under 5 ppm. For comparison, FDA standard for gluten-free is under 20 ppm, and GFCO is under 10 ppm. So we are more strict. This doesn't mean there is any gluten in the bars, but it does mean there could be anywhere from 0 ppm to 5 ppm (a negative result is achieved so long as there is under 5 ppm.)
